Patient Stories

Orion

Pre- and Post-Op TPLO

Orion started coming to the Gym for rehab sessions prior to her TPLO surgery, AKA 'prehab'.  Prehab helps get the pet used to rehab and the therapist, which makes transitioning to post-op care smoother.  It is also part of the multimodal approach to pain control, and slows muscle atrophy comparatively to crate rest only pre-op.

After her surgery, Orion came right back to rehab for continued care.  She was in her rehab program for a few months, and has since graduated.  She spent the winter frolicking in the snow - something her owner didn't think she'd be able to do again.

Buddy was came to the Gym after being diagnosed with Coonhound Paralysis.  Coonhound paralysis is an unusual condition of the nervous system that causes paralysis, but often resolves without treatment.  Some dogs fully recover while some will have some mild deficiencies that persist.  Neurologic conditions that cause paralysis very quickly cause muscle wasting, and as they recover, they have to reteach their body how to move.  Rehab can assist in the recovery of Coonhound Paralysis by helping build muscle and coordination before the pet goes back to normal activity to prevent other orthopedic type injuries. It's been proven with the help of rehab, recovery is faster in these conditions.

Mabel

Conservative Management of a Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tear

Mabel is an eager pup that tore her cranial cruciate ligament (CCL).  Due to other medical conditions, she was a high risk case for anesthesia making surgical repair not an ideal option. Luckily, with restricted activity, controlled isolated exercise, and some time Mabel made a great recovery.
